Background

Project Overview & Context

Structures Housing Ltd undertook the role of principal contractor on this project. We were awarded the works for St Joseph Player’s CIO, a charitable organization and amateur dramatics club who operates the hall. Structures Housing Ltd provided a full site set up including access scaffold, welfare facilities and site management to facilitate the repair works as well as carrying out the works ourselves and management of subcontractors. Structures Housing Ltd as a contractor specialises in masonry repairs but we also have the capacity to adopt a principal contractor role on projects with specialist requirements. St Joseph’s Hall had various defects to the existing building including water ingress, defective parapet masonry and a defective decorative concrete façade structure.

Work Undertaken

Scope of Works & Restoration

Structures Housing Ltd is a professional contractor who specializes in repairing and maintaining the external brick, stone, and concrete repairs to masonry superstructures.

  • Concrete repairs: We quickly mobilised to repair and restore the concrete frame façade of St Joseph’s Hall using FOSROC concrete repair materials in line with best practice manufacturer’s instructions. This was an emergency works package as debris were reported to be falling from the façade at height.
  • Masonry repairs: Re-pointing (replacing deteriorated mortar joints), repairing cracked or broken bricks, replacing missing stones, and ensuring proper drainage to prevent water damage. Given St Joseph’s Hall was built in 1925, we matched the existing buildings composition in terms of masonry, mortar and other materials – contractors often must work with a variety of materials including heritage lime mortars to match existing local construction as much as possible.
  • Cleaning: As a Stone Health Ltd approved contractor, WJ Structures remit includes both heritage and social housing cleaning services including jet washing, DOFF Integra steam cleaning and TORC cleaning, Sympathetic cleaning methods which help preserve and restore an existing buildings façade.
