Penderyn Whsikey Distillary.

The Welsh government granted Penderyn a £1,400,000 grant to renovate the old boarding school into a whiskey distillery as part of the ‘tourism investment scheme’ and the ‘food business investment scheme’. An estimated 60,000 visitors are welcomed to visit the distillery each year. Planning permission was approved on the Grade-II listed building in May 2020, and work to the former boarding school began not long after, including the building of a modern glazed extension, tasting bar, visitor center with shops, exhibition space, toilets and a VIP bar. The newly converted distillery will be Penderyn’s second distillery, alongside the Aberdare distillery.

In working partnership with longstanding client MPH Construction, we carried out a variety of work items including providing an external condition report, costing and subsequently carrying out stone repairs to decorative features of the listed building including – stone heads/cills/window mullions and transoms. We used different lime-based repair mortars within a combination of different aggregates so we could achieve a best match for the existing facades. We also carried out stucco repairs and a large volume of stone indents using stone sourced from local quarries. We also carried out some internal works which consisted of DOFF cleaning to heritage tiles and concrete blockwork infills to meet new general arrangement plans. We worked alongside MPH also troubleshooting different repair methods along the way to offer the most cost effective and practical solutions for our client. The new Penderyn Distillery gives the listed building a revitalised purpose and has been successful in attracting tourists from all over the United Kingdom.
